As the Fine Gael party is set to announce a new party chief who will also take over as An Taoiseach, the Irish fishing industry can only hope that Simon Harris uses his new position to put pressure on Fine Gael’s coalition government partners to address the urgent issues that currently face the Irish inshore, demersal, pelagic, processing and seafood retailing sectors - all of which have seen an alarming decline, particularly in recent years, largely due to lack of Goverment support and a lack of challenging the EU Commission in defending the Irish fishing industry against the onslaught of foreign vessels gaining access to Irish fish in Irish waters.
